Alex Calder  1961 - 1986

Alex Calder

Rev. Calder was born in Beaverton, Ontario, where he received his initial education. At the University of Toronto, he attained his B.A. in 1941, and following theological studies at Knox College, received a B.D. from that institution after post graduate work.

His first service after ordination was in the Mission field at Geraldton, Ontario, and then to charges at Norwich and Georgetown, where he remained for twelve years. During this latter period he also served as Chaplain to the Lorne Scots regiment for approximately seven years. The call to St. Paul's was accepted and Rev. Calder was inducted on the 12th January 1961.

It is doubtful whether Rev. Calder ever expected to remain at St. Paul's for the major portion of his serving years in the ministry. His abilities as a spiritual and pastoral leader are unquestioned, his loyalty and devotion to duty exemplary, his sympathetic understanding when visiting the sick, shut-ins and bereaved is ever apparent, and his humor and hearty laugh have endeared him to many people both within and without the Church.

22 years later, his leadership, diligence and faithful service to the Church have been given well deserved recognition. At Knox College convocation, on the 11th May 1983, the degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred  upon this sincere, warm and popular minister of the Presbyterian Church.

In 1984, the General Assembly of The Presbyterian Church Canada was held in St. Paul’s and the Rev. Calder was elected as its moderator.
