Charles Boyd  1947 - 1956

Charles Gordon Boyd

Rev. Boyd served at St. Paul's during the marginally noted years and was considered a most capable and compassionate pastor, who in his ten years in Peterborough endeared himself to all the congregation.

It was a source of pride for him to witness the start of a mission congregation in the South End of the City, which rapidly flourished and became the self supporting charge of St. Giles.

In spite of the loss of members in the formation of the new church, the St. Paul's membership achieved its highest peak in the history of the congregation. During his ministry Rev. Boyd served as Moderator of the Peterborough Presbytery and also as President of the Peterborough Ministerial Association. Mrs. Boyd had taken an active part in the church and Sunday School and in the University Women’s Club.

Following the acceptance of a call to Parkdale Presbyterian Church, Toronto, in 1957, it was at the farewell service that Rev. Boyd struck a personal note as to his tenets and philosophy in summing up his ministry at St. Paul's. “Every step of my life has been ordered by God. I have had frustrations in my ministry which have been doors closed to me, only to have fulfillments like doors opened in other directions. The only authority any man has to stand before other men and preach, is to be commissioned an agent of God. To be an agent of God is to bear witness to what God has done for men in Christ as has been recorded in the Bible, and experienced by men who have believed it over all the ages. I have tried to be forthright, to avoid fence straddling, pussyfooting and old fogeyism in the pulpit. It is not the business of a minister to say an old thing, but to say an old thing with new power. I have preached the old Gospel for today's needs like fresh light for today's vision from a very old sun.
